After Ride Care

Looking after your eBike battery is simple but there’s some after-ride care for your bike battery that you need to consider when using your electric bike. To mitigate any issues with your bike battery first thing you need to do is remove the battery from the bike before cleaning. This will stop any unwanted damage to the battery and increase its longevity. After any ride that you go on with the electric bike make sure the battery is fully charged, this will ensure that the battery is being used effectively. Lastly, make sure when you put the battery back it is fully clipped back inside the frame, this will stop the battery from falling out or you from losing power when on a ride. To make sure that your bike is clean before a ride consider the Muc-Off pressure washer.

Storage

When storing your eBike battery for long periods of time it’s best to keep the battery partially charged. If you store the battery completely flat then you run the risk of damaging the internals of the cells themselves. Also if you store the battery fully charged this can leave the cells under more pressure. So it’s best to keep the battery stored in between.

For the Bosch battery in particular the optimum charge state to leave it in is 60% (Or 3 LED’s lit on the battery level indicator). Try to check the capacity every 6 months or so. When the battery reaches 1 LED showing, then top it back up to 3 LED’s again. Many people think it’s best to keep the battery on the charger so it’s always topped up in storage, but this is simply not the case. The Bosch charger won’t ‘overcharge’ the battery at all and does not trickle charge. Consider the Giant battery storage below.

Extending The Battery Life

One way to extend the life of the battery is to make sure the tyres are fully inflated. This will increase the range of the battery by about 10-15%.

You can also put your Bosch eBike in EMTB mode. This will vary the motor’s input depending on what you are putting in yourself. This will give you the most bike-like ride feel and will give you an even drain on your battery. With Yamaha versions have a small shock absorber so the battery does not move in the frame at all, this will save your bike battery from any damage.

Battery covers are another way to stop any damage whilst using the bike on the road or whilst it is in storage. Incorporating all these techniques can help you get the most out of your ebike.
