VC Revolution–Our Cycling Club

   Words by Paul Thomas

Velo Club Revolution is a lively, friendly, Colchester cycling club active in north Essex and south Suffolk.

Originally formed in 2007, VC Revolution has members involved in all fields of the sport. As well as the regular social club runs that take place on mainly on Saturdays, club members are also active in sportives, time trials, road and track races, on-road and off-road challenge rides and a wide range of social activities.

Whilst there will never be a requirement or pressure for members to compete, racing is encouraged and the club has a number of competitive riders with many years of racing experience, all of whom are always willing to offer help and advice on racing and training. This experience has been gained in the four main areas of cycling of which VCR are interested; Road Racing, Track racing (indoor, outdoor and grass track), Time Trialling and Cyclo Cross.

Members are encouraged to get involved in the running of the club and the promotion of events. Put simply, decisions are made for the good of the club, democratically by the club members. VCR welcome members of any age and ability new to cycle sport to join us and develop as a cyclist.

Our website provides news and resources for existing members, information for people interested in riding our events, and is a window on the club for anyone thinking of joining. This can be found here. We also have a presence on both Facebook and Twitter , which are regularly updated with our activities.

If you would like more information about the club, you can contact them through the website here.

VCR

VCR Rides:

The club operates a social club ride from Colchester on Saturday mornings. The pace is always dictated by the slowest rider and nobody gets left behind.

You don’t have to be a member to ride with VCR. If you’re keen to learn more about the club or want to learn the art of group riding then feel free to come along and join us on a weekend ride.

Saturday Club Rides:

On a Saturday we meet at the junction of St Johns Road and Parsons Heath (A137) opposite the former Lindhill Car dealership (map here). We meet at 8:50 and leave at 9am sharp.

The ride covers around 40 miles, usually between 17-18mph, though nobody gets left behind. The ride always incorporates a café stop after about 30 miles so bring some money for a coffee and slice of cake!

Sometimes if there are lots of us we’ll split up into a fast and slow group.

The route heads out from Colchester towards Clacton before turning through Wix then on to the café stop before returning back to Colchester. If you have a GPS here is a plot of the route.

If you’re feeling fit quite often some hardy souls will meet at 8am in order to get an extra hours riding in before meeting the others at the 9am point mentioned above. The usual meeting point for the 8am crew is the Greenstead Roundabout near Tesco (here) on the path on the edge of the roundabout nearest Tesco. Those that are opting for the 8am start usually post up on the Facebook group so best to check there first.

Saturday Shop Rides:

We also have A brand new ride starting and finishing at the Cycle Revolution Store in Colchester!

It is a beginners/skill building ride aimed at the new road cyclist or people who want to learn how to ride in a group efficiently and gain confidence.

You don’t need to be a VCR member to start these rides. We like to help the cycling community and encourage as many people as we can to get into this fantastic sport. This ride will mean you can enjoy the social side of riding and make sure you get the proper introduction to group riding with the right help and guidance.

It’s a 25 mile round trip at around a 14-15mph average speed and we also have a no drop policy on these rides, so don’t be afraid to come along, you will be looked after.

You must let us know if you would like to attend one of these rides by calling Cycle Revolution on 01206 764545 or by speaking to another VCR member. These rides will be every two weeks on a Saturday, for confirmed dates and ride times just contact the shop.
